Fast Fashion vs. Circular Fashion

Charlton Street market has traditionally been a market to sell clothes with much of the clothes being sold, being cheaper quality clothes, contributing to the consumption of fast fashion. What projects and platforms could be developed to support the sharing of used clothes, extend the life cycle of the clothes already in circulation, and encourage a transition to slow fashion.

One of the biggest contributors to our carbon footprint nationally and globally is fast fashion, but in a community where the average household income means that fast fashion is the only option, we will work to look to other solutions that widen the choice, but reduce the impact

I worked with Somers Town Community Association linking in with our work on the Somers Town Neighbourhoods 2030 GLA project, the National Lottery Climate Action Fund and Make@StoryGarden.

We hosted a variety of community workshops as a means to analyse the needs of the market stall holders. We then developed an innovative prototype upcycled bag from post-consumer waste of surrounding businesses. This bag would enable ease of repair and customisation and supports local businesses. The suggested end usage would be to sell on Charlton Street Market.

  • Climate Studio worked with CSM’s long term partner the Somers Town Community Association to contribute towards community-led circular economy projects, centred around making the Charlton Street Market the focal point for knowledge exchange, ideas, and sharing of resources to inspire change.
